The simple solution to laptop hunch

The laptop computer is a great tool for workers on the go, but what about those bound to a desk? What about those who are only mobile part of the time? Ergonomically speaking, the laptop was never designed for the permanent—or even semi-permanent—workstation.

With Humanscale’s ergonomic laptop holders, the discomfort and long-term injury risks of laptop use are things of the past. By encouraging the user to sit back in his chair and requiring use of an external keyboard and mouse, our laptop holders promote good ergonomic posture while allowing the user to work as though on a desktop computer.

Risks of Laptop Use

For all its convenience, the laptop computer can wreak havoc on the human body. Without the aid of a laptop holder, laptop users risk discomfort and pain from a number of musculoskeletal disorders and physical ailments:

  • Neck pain
  • Upper and lower back pain
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Computer vision syndrome

Additionally, discomfort and pain from prolonged laptop use can result in any of the following:

  • Decreased productivity
  • Discomfort while performing other tasks
  • Missed work/injury leave
  • Workers’ compensation claims

The Ergo Answer

Most full-time laptop users work in the familiar hunched-over posture pictured in Figure 1 below. However, given the benefit of a laptop holder, the user is able to achieve good ergonomic posture, as pictured in Figure 2.

The laptop holder elevates the laptop display to eye level at an optimal distance from the user. Plus, the external keyboard and mouse allow him to sit back in his chair and maintain healthy posture, eliminating the risks and discomfort associated with “laptop hunch.”
