Humanscale's Horizon™ Honored with Next Generation Luminaires™ Award
Striking Task Light Recognized for Innovative Use of LEDs, Adjustability and Aesthetic Design
LAS VEGAS, May 10, 2012 — Humanscale’s Horizon has been recognized by the prestigious Next Generation Luminaires (NGL) Solid-State Lighting (SSL) Design Competition for its cutting-edge design and exceptional functionality. More than one hundred products were entered into the competition for indoor products, with only a portion of entries earning “recognized” status, meaning they are deemed by the competition judges to be worthy of specification by lighting designers.
Launched in 2008 and sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), the Illuminating Engineering Society and the International Association of Lighting Designers, NGL encourages technical innovation and promotes excellence in the design of energy-efficient LED lights in commercial, industrial and institutional lighting applications. NGL strives to make it easier for lighting designers to find lights that are specifiable, and therefore evaluates products based on a vast array of strict requirements such as color quality, appropriate illuminance, light distribution, dimmability, energy efficiency and value. This year, the competition brought together eight judges and two steering committees, which evaluated all lights from 16 different categories—Cove, Decorative, Decorative Luminaires, Downlights, High-bay, Linear (pendant/surface), Other, Pendant/Surface, Recessed Accent, Recessed Linear, Recessed Modular, Recessed Wall Washers, Task Lamp, Track, Undercabinet and Utility—based on these stringent criteria. “This is not just a beauty contest,” said DOE SSL program manager Dr. James Brodrick. “The winners also have to perform well.” Specifically, Horizon—which was entered in the Task Lamp (Desk-Mounted Task Luminaires) category—received commendation for its futuristic design, its innovative use of LEDs and its fluid adjustability.
A visually striking fusion of form and function, Horizon represents the first use of Thin Film LED Technology™ in an innovative LED task light. Designed by Peter Stathis and Michael McCoy, Horizon overcomes the weaknesses of most conventional LED lights by offering brilliant 3000K illumination and excellent light distribution in a slender profile. Horizon uses a number of high-intensity micro LEDs that surround several layers of polycarbonate and optical films to create an ultra-wide footprint of warm, glare-free light that casts only one shadow on the work surface. Its built-in dimmer control offers seven settings for dimmability, providing both energy savings and customizable levels of illumination. This honor from NGL marks another in Horizon’s extensive, ever-growing list of accolades, which includes a Red Dot Award for Product Design, a 2012 IHA Innovation Award, a Gold IDA Award, an Interior Design Best of Year Award and an IIDEX/NeoCon Canada Innovation Award, among many others.
The NGL winners were announced on May 10, 2012 at LIGHTFAIR® International, the world’s largest annual architectural and commercial lighting trade show and conference, in Las Vegas, Nev.
