Humanscale's Horizon Honored with International Housewares Association Innovation Award
LED Task Light Recognized as a “Cutting-Edge Innovation”
NEW YORK — Humanscale’s Horizon LED task light has earned a 2012 International Housewares Association (IHA) Innovation Award for its iconic design and advanced performance. More than 400 products were entered in the inaugural IHA Innovation Awards competition, with 60 products selected as finalists and only one product in each of the 12 categories emerging as a winner. Horizon was the winner in the Household Electrics + Home Environment category, triumphing over a number of other products, including those by industry giants such as Dyson and Whirlpool.
A visually striking fusion of form and function, Horizon represents the first use of Thin Film LED Technology™ in an innovative LED task light. Designed by Peter Stathis and Michael McCoy, Horizon overcomes the weaknesses of most conventional LED lights by offering brilliant 3000K illumination and excellent light distribution in a slender profile. Horizon uses a number of high-intensity micro LEDs that surround several layers of polycarbonate and optical films to create an ultra-wide footprint of warm, glare-free light that casts only one shadow on the work surface. Its built-in dimmer control offers seven settings for dimmability, providing both energy savings and customizable levels of illumination. The 2012 IHA Innovation Award marks another in Horizon’s extensive, ever-growing list of accolades, which includes a Red Dot Award for Product Design, a Gold IDA Award, an Interior Design Best of Year Award, and an IIDEX/NeoCon Canada Innovation Award, among many others.
IHA President Phil Brandl praised those winning products that stood out from the hundreds of other entries. “Congratulations to these winners, they are excellent representatives of the cutting-edge innovation and creation happening in the housewares industry,” said Brandl. “Based on the efforts of these and other design-focused companies in our industry, consumers are able to fill their homes with innovative products that meet their individual needs and varied lifestyles.”
The discerning judging panel for this first annual IHA Innovation Awards competition was comprised of housewares merchants from retailers such as Target, JCPenney, Sears, The Container Store, Sur La Table, Bon-Ton, The Cook's Warehouse, Kitchen Window, A Southern Season and Cucina Fresca. Other judges included editors from KitchenBoy blog and Brides Magazine, as well as many distinguished industry designers.
The winners in each of the 12 categories were announced on March 10, the first day of the 2012 International Home + Housewares Show, which is currently taking place through March 13, at McCormick Place in Chicago, Ill. Alongside the other 11 winners, Horizon is on display in the Hall of Global Innovation in the Lakeside Center. In addition, the 60 finalists in all categories are featured in the New Product Showcases in the Buyers Club in each Show building.
