NEW YORK, February 11, 2010 — Design legend Niels Diffrient is set to speak at Design for Humans, a forum on user-centered design hosted by the Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum on Thursday, Feb. 25. Winner of the prestigious National Design Award, Diffrient will appear with other National Design Award winners and finalists who have been recognized for their contributions to the field of Product Design.

Diffrient, creator of Humanscale’s Freedom, Liberty and Diffrient World chairs, received the National Design Award for Product Design in 2002, recognizing his significant and enduring contributions to American industrial design. He is set to appear with Sigi Moeslinger of Antenna Design and Dan Formosa of Smart Design, among other National Design Award winners and finalists. Samples of Diffrient’s work will also be featured as part of the event.

The Cooper-Hewitt has honored Diffrient and his designs in the past, most recently as part of its Design USA: Contemporary Innovation exhibition, a celebration of the first 10 years of the National Design Awards. That exhibit, which debuted October 16, 2009, is on display through April 4. Diffrient was also recognized as part of the Cooper-Hewitt’s third National Design Triennial, which honored the Liberty chair as one of the most innovative and forward-thinking designs in American culture from 2003 to 2006. Diffrient joined 86 other designers and firms that were honored at the Triennial exhibition, including Boeing, Nike, Apple and NASA.

Moderated by Jesse Ashlock, former Editor-in-Chief of I.D. Magazine, Design for Humans will be held from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 25 at the Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum. The Cooper-Hewitt is located at 91st Street and 5th Avenue, in the Andrew Carnegie mansion on New York’s famed Museum Mile. Admission is $15.
